Washington’s Water

Nutrient & Pesticide Management

Nutrient and pesticide management is economically sensitive to farmers as application of chemicals to crops produce larger and healthier harvests. The other side of this coin is that over-use of pesticides and build-up of nutrients in waterways can cause health problems in humans and wildlife.  Excess chemicals enter rivers through the return flow from farm irrigation operations and urban storm drains.  Homeowners tend to use proportionately more pesticides than do farmers, sending large amounts of chemicals into the public wastewater treatment systems. Groundwater contamination from pesticides and nutrients is irreversible because it is not feasible or possible to pump, clean, and refill aquifers. Therefore, farmers and homeowners should employ methods to gauge proper application amounts.
